How to enable dark mode for Instagram

Running Instagram in dark mode can help conserve energy (as Google research has revealed), it is easier for the eyes at night, the contrast can make the text easier to read and perhaps most importantly, simply looks great.

Developers have been struggling to update their applications with new color schemes in recent months (Google Chrome, Facebook and Twitter have received image changes), and Instagram is one of the last to get the option.

However, enabling dark mode for Instagram is not as simple as pressing a switch in the application, and is not yet available to everyone. As the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, points out in a tweet, he must be running the latest version of the mobile operating system, that is, Android 10 or iOS 13, to enjoy the dark tones:

If you have one of those operating systems, Instagram will automatically change color when you activate the dark mode on the entire system of the device. There is no way to activate the dark mode within Instagram, but hopefully that will change with a future update.

If that happens, we will update this guide accordingly, with full instructions explaining how to make the change.

  • Enable dark mode for Instagram on iOS 13
  • Open your phone settings
  • Select ‘Screen and brightness’
  • Touch ‘Dark’ to change the theme.
  • Launch Instagram

Enable dark mode for Instagram on Android 10

  • Open your phone settings
  • Scroll down to ‘Screen’
