How to Go Viral on X (Twitter): What the Algorithm Rewards
X ranks the For You feed with a model built on the same design as xAI’s Grok. For each viewer it predicts what they might do with a post (like, reply, repost, share, look at it for a while) and also the negative actions (mute, block, report), then turns all of that into one score (X on GitHub, TechCrunch). So the posts that spread are the ones people reply to, share and stop on, and don’t hide or report.
What X’s algorithm counts
X published the code of its current For You ranking on January 20, 2026 (TechCrunch). The actions it predicts include time spent on a post and clicks on its link, photo or video (X on GitHub). Here is how much each action weighs, as PPC Land read it in X’s August 2026 code:

Source: PPC Land. The weights multiply the chance that a viewer takes each action, not raw counts (X on GitHub). X’s 2023 code pointed the same way: a like weighed 0.5, a reply 13.5, and a reply the author engaged with 75 (Twitter on GitHub).
The code also filters posts out before ranking: posts older than 48 hours, posts from accounts the viewer blocked or muted, posts with muted words, and posts the viewer already saw. Posts from accounts the viewer doesn’t follow get a lower factor, and several posts in a row from one author count for less each time (X on GitHub).
What helps a post spread
- Write something people want to answer or send. Replies, quotes and shares weigh many times more than likes.
- Answer your replies. When X ranks the replies under a post, it looks at whether the author replied (X Help).
- Add a photo or video, and keep the text conversational and short. X’s own business guide says both, and to post consistently (X Business).
- Use one or two hashtags at most (X Business). Elon Musk went further in December 2024: “Please stop using hashtags” (FOX 5).
- Spread your posts out. Posting many times in a row lowers each one.
- Use a thread for a longer idea: compose, tap the plus icon for each extra post, then Post all (X Help).
What hurts reach
- Mutes, blocks and reports. They weigh far more than any positive action. A post that annoys people loses reach fast.
- Age. Posts older than 48 hours aren’t recommended in For You.
- Links, in the past. In 2023 Musk said link posts get less attention because people click away (Axios). In July 2026, X’s head of product Nikita Bier said you no longer need to put links in replies, and Musk said X hadn’t limited links “for over a year” (PPC Land).
Does X Premium help?
In replies, yes. Premium replies get “larger” and Premium+ the “largest” priority, and X says it is still testing the levels (X Help). For the For You feed, X hasn’t announced a Premium boost, and the published code doesn’t show one. Claims that Premium doubles or quadruples reach don’t match the code (Sprout Social), though a boost outside the published code can’t be ruled out (RankSaga). Premium also lets you write posts of up to 25,000 characters instead of 280 (X Help).

How many likes does a post need to go viral?
There’s no number. Likes are the weakest positive signal in X’s code. Replies, shares and follows count more.
Do links hurt reach on X?
X says not any more. In July 2026 its staff said links in posts are no longer limited.
