How an Instagram engagement rate is calculated
A worked example makes it easier to reproduce the result and compare future samples on the same basis.
Example inputs
An account has 10,000 followers, 500 average likes, and 25 average comments per recent post.
Example calculation
(500 likes + 25 comments) ÷ 10,000 followers × 100 = 5.25% follower-based engagement.
Use the number carefully
Compare similar account sizes, content types, and time periods. No single percentage defines a good result for every account.
About this free tool
How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?
The standard follower-based formula is (average likes + average comments) divided by followers, multiplied by 100.
Why are average comments optional?
The public post feed used by this tool does not supply a dependable comment total. Add your own average to include comments; otherwise the tool labels the result as public like rate.
How many posts are included in the average?
The tool requests up to 12 recent public posts and displays the exact number included in the current result.
Why can my result change?
The recent-post sample changes as new content is published and as visible like counts increase.
Does a higher engagement rate always mean a better account?
It is one useful signal. Account size, content type, reach, posting consistency, and audience relevance also matter.
Is this the same as reach-based engagement?
No. This calculator uses followers as the denominator. Reach-based engagement requires private reach data from the account owner’s insights.
