TAKEN OR NOT

Know before you change your name

Instagram usernames are unique. The checker looks the name up on Instagram at the moment you ask: a public or private account using it means the name is taken. When no account answers, the name may be free, and the result tells you what can still stand in the way.

Taken or free in one check

A public or private account using the name shows as taken, with the profile’s public numbers when it is public.

The username rules first

Letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, up to 30 characters. A name that breaks a rule is flagged before any lookup.

Ideas when it is taken

Variations with periods, underscores, and short words, the way Instagram itself suggests for names already in use.

HOW TO USE IT

Check an Instagram username in three steps

Use it before you sign up, rebrand, or rename an existing account.

1

Type the name you want

Enter it with or without the @. Capital letters make no difference on Instagram.

2

Read the answer

See whether an account uses the name and whether the name follows Instagram’s rules.

3

Claim it in the app

If it looks free, open Edit profile in Instagram and change your username right away.

WHEN A FREE-LOOKING NAME FAILS

Why Instagram can still refuse a name

No account answering is a good sign, not a guarantee. These are the usual reasons a name is still blocked.

Recently removed from an account

Instagram may hold back a name that was recently removed from an active account you do not own.

A deactivated account

An account that is temporarily deactivated still exists, so its name stays taken even though no profile appears.

A name that only seems unused

Instagram does not hand over a name because its account looks inactive. It suggests a version with periods, numbers, underscores, or abbreviations instead.

COMMON QUESTIONS

About this free tool

How do I know if an Instagram username is taken?

Enter it above. If a public or private account uses the name, the checker shows it as taken. If no account answers, the name may be available, and you can confirm it in the app.

What characters can an Instagram username have?

Letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, up to 30 characters. Spaces, hyphens, and emoji are not accepted, and capital letters make no difference.

Is a name free if no account is found?

Usually, but not always. A temporarily deactivated account keeps its name, and Instagram may hold back a name that was recently removed from an active account. Try it in Edit profile to be sure.

Can I get a username from an inactive account?

Instagram’s Help Center says that when a name you want belongs to an account that seems inactive, you can choose an available version of it, for example with periods, numbers, underscores, or abbreviations.

Is the account owner notified?

No. The checker only reads public profile data. Nothing is followed, liked, or sent to the account.

Do you store the names I check?

The answer for a name is cached for up to 10 minutes so repeated checks do not overload the service. The cache holds the public result, not who asked.
